[Tia Fuller Quartet | One thing I love bout her, besides the fact that she is the only other Black female alto saxophonist I know of (and has rescued me from looking up to the subpar vocal/instrumental combo of Mindy Abair, is her fearlessness to improvise.

She also toured with Beyonce, and although Beyonce is nothing new, one thing you cannot deny is her stage presence. And the idea of an all female band is fairly new. Not unheard of, but new. Anyone who’s ever gone to her live show has never been the same. Like, literally, people are changed after watching what she does live.

Its also cool to be able to go through the video progression of how Tia has changed up her look, her stage presence, and her set to more fully engage her audience. She learned that from being on tour with B.

One of the things I struggle with as an artist is definitely stage presence (because I frankly can’t think of who else is there or I get scared) and also improvisation. I dont plug in enough hours with the music to feel comfortable solo’ing to it. I feel like when I do know a song, I have knocked out some stage presence with the catching of my core, and the small leg kicks, and the facial expressions, and lifting my horn up and all that.

I’m still a work in progress though.
